One Two Three

One.
Two.
Three.
Open your eyes.

One.
Two.
Three.
Breathe.

One.
Two.
Three.
Feet on the floor.

One… two… start your day.
Start your day.
Start. Your. Day.

This has been my routine self talk for as long as I can remember. It is not dramatic. It is not inspirational poster worthy. It is not the kind of thing people clap for.

It is survival language.
It is the quiet conversation that happens before the world sees me. Before the smile. Before the coffee. Before the “I’m fine.”
It is the moment where the day could go either way.

And sometimes, it takes everything in me just to begin. Depression does not always look like darkness. Sometimes it looks like bargaining.

“Just sit up.”
“Just put your feet down.”
“Just breathe.”
“Just try.”

There are mornings when my body feels heavier than it should, like gravity decided I am its favorite target. Mornings where my thoughts arrive before hope does. Mornings where nothing is wrong and yet everything feels wrong.

And that is one of the hardest parts to explain.

There is not always a reason.
There is not always a trigger.
There is not always a story that makes it make sense to other people.
But the weight is real anyway.

I have lived a lot of life in these small countdowns.

One two three answer the message.
One two three get in the shower.
One two three smile at the kids.
One two three be the version of yourself the world recognizes.

Tiny negotiations that nobody sees.

People often celebrate the big victories, the accomplishments, the milestones, the visible strength. But some days, the bravest thing I do is start. That is it.

Start the day when my mind is arguing with me.
Start the day when exhaustion is not physical, it is emotional.
Start the day when hope whispers quieter than fear.

Depression is strange like that. It does not always steal your life. Sometimes it just steals your momentum. It inserts hesitation where confidence used to live. It replaces certainty with effort. It turns ordinary tasks into mountains that feel impossible to climb.

And yet somehow, we climb anyway. Slowly.
Messily. Without applause.

There have been so many mornings like this one. Mornings where I have laid there negotiating with myself. Mornings where the countdown felt like the only structure holding me together. Mornings where starting felt like proof of strength I did not believe I had.

And if I am honest, there will be more. That used to scare me. Now it does not as much. Because I have learned something important.

The countdown works. Not because it fixes everything. Not because it removes the weight. But because it creates movement. And movement is powerful. Movement is hope in action.

There is a quiet courage in continuing.
In brushing your teeth when your mind is loud. In answering texts when you want to disappear.  In showing up for your students, your family, your friends when showing up for yourself feels hardest.

People see the version of us that functions.
They do not see the countdown. They do not see the invisible starting line we cross every single day. But it exists. And if you know, you know.

I used to think strength meant pushing through without struggle. Now I know strength often looks like whispering to yourself, “Just begin.”

Not perfectly.
Not energetically.
Not with certainty.
Just begin.

Because beginning is an act of defiance against the voice that says you cannot. So this morning, like so many mornings before, I counted.

One.
Two.
Three.
Open your eyes.

One.
Two.
Three.
Breathe.

One.
Two.
Three.
Feet on the floor.

And eventually, gently, imperfectly, bravely, I started my day. Again.

If this is you too, I want you to know something. The countdown counts. Starting counts. Small movement counts. Trying counts. Existing on hard days counts.

You are not weak for needing the countdown. You are human. And every time you begin, even quietly, you are choosing to stay.

One.
Two.
Three.
We start again. 💛
